Weeping Woman, (Rosa Meissner) 1907-1909
by Edvard Munch
Oil on canvas

Munch´s photograph of his model Rosa Meissner in the Hotle Rôhne, Warnemünde in 1907 is an evocative photograph which inspired Munch to develop the theme of weeping Psyche in paintings, graphic and sculpture. The person seen transparent in the background is her sister.

  1. This provides a good window into his methods.

    1. I'm really interested in him introducing the image of her sister. I'd looked at the photograph many times but hadn't noticed her spectral image in the background.
