Kesey's book was brilliant, I read it before the film came out and thought the film was great too. I can't remember hearing that Kesey was unhappy with the film. I doubt writers are ever fully satisfied with adaptions of their work. Yes, wonderful photo - Mary Ellen Mark' work is fairly new to me, great photographer.
True, that writers are often unhappy with movies based on their work. According to a couple websites, Kesey refused to even watch the film. I agree with you on both the film and book.
I was just in Salem, Oregon, last week. That's an excellent photo(and book and movie). Ken Kesey was unhappy with the film, as you probably know.
