At the age of about 14 I said to my mum: “I don’t think it matters whether someone is a boy or a girl, I think I would love the person rather than the gender.” My mum’s response was: “I think that if you choose to be gay, you’d be choosing a very difficult life for yourself” – and we never spoke about it again. If I could speak to my younger self I’d tell her not to be afraid of being different, you’ll find that it’s the thing you’ll learn to love about yourself when you’re older.’ From the series Queer Letters.
